Pathways Abroad: AEC Unites Helps PVAMU Students Gain Global Perspective in Architecture

This summer, AEC Unites proudly sponsored two students from Prairie View A&M University to study abroad in Europe. For Victor Demone Doolin and Rhea Delana Simpson, the experience was more than an academic opportunity, it was a life-changing journey that reshaped how they see their future in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry.

Victor Demone Doolin: Inspired by Timeless Craftsmanship

For Victor, stepping into centuries-old cathedrals and architectural marvels across Europe was both humbling and inspiring.

“One experience that changed how I view the industry is understanding the deep history behind the work we do. The advancements we’ve made in architecture and engineering are the result of centuries of progress,” Victor shared. “Visiting the cathedrals in Rome reminded me that great design is about creating something for people to enjoy. These buildings are true testaments to timeless craftsmanship and thoughtful engineering.”

The trip also marked Victor’s first time traveling abroad, making the impact even more personal.

“It sparked a deeper desire to travel, explore new cultures, and understand the world beyond my own. Seeing places like the Brunelleschi Dome in person felt surreal. It reminded me why I chose this field and how powerful it is to experience architecture firsthand.”

Victor expressed deep gratitude to the AEC firms and professionals who made the opportunity possible: “Your support gave us the opportunity to take part in something truly unforgettable… inspiring and educational.”

Rhea Delana Simpson: Building a Future with History in Mind

Rhea found inspiration in Italy’s unique balance of preserving the past while embracing the future.

“Seeing how Italy blends ancient and modern design made me think more critically about the world I want to build. I want to pursue historic preservation and renovation, and experiencing Italy’s architectural diversity changed the way I think about the design process.”

Her academic interests in history also came alive during the trip.

“I think this opportunity deepened my love of history. I have a minor in history, and I believe that for a design to be successful, it should connect with the history and the culture of its location. Wandering around Rome, Florence, and Pompeii felt like being in a living museum, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

To those who supported her journey, Rhea offered heartfelt thanks: “It was an amazing experience, and it will always be one of my favorite memories.”
